Search for missing swimmer after two friends rescued from Toti rip current


The search continued on Thursday for a third young swimmer who is still missing after three friends were caught in a rip current and two were quickly rescued at the Amanzimtoti Main Beach on Wednesday evening.

Police spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, said, “Police divers from the Search and Rescue Unit were called out to the Amanzimtoti Main Beach to attend to a drowning. It is alleged three males had gone for a swim near the rock pool and were trapped by a rip current. Two of the victims aged 18 years old were treated and taken to hospital. The third victim is still being sought. The search is still continuing.”

Amanzimtoti SAPS communications officer, Cpt C Van der Spuy, said, “The Search and Rescue Team resumed their search on Thursday morning, no positive result at present.”

Vema Medics who responded to the call for medical assistance at the seaside crisis shared on their Facebook page and said, “…Vema Medics were called requesting urgent medical assistance for a mass drowning in progress at Amanzimtoti Beach. VEMA medic along with ER24 arrived on scene and found that one person had sustained moderate injuries while one other was still missing. The patient was stabilsed on scene and transported by ER24 to a nearby facility for further treatment. Assistance to the South African Police Search and Rescue as well as Metro Police Search and Rescue was called for the missing swimmer. After an extensive search by Police and Lifeguards the missing swimmer has not been located. Search will continue at first light. Events leading up to the incident will be subject to a South African Police Service Investigation.”

There is still no confirmation of the third swimmer being found.
